"An eye-opening and provocative book." Icon

Bridging between design, geopolitics, architecture, and branding, Metahaven's Uncorporate Identity defies easy categorization as a monograph. The book is organized as a sequence of five chapters, dealing with data havens and statehood, post-communist architecture, visual legacies of the war on terror, tourist brands and border control, and social networks restructuring soft power, branding and governance internationally. With each chapter comprised of case studies, notes and essays, it explores visual identity in a networked and multi-polar world.

"Uncorporate Identity questions the purpose and value of design in a neurotic and treacherous era of geopolitical instability."

Alice Rawsthorn, International Herald Tribune

"A sustained and multivalent investigation into the relationship between design and power, often using visual and design tactics themselves as the form of interrogation. (...)

In an appropriately inside-out manner, Metahaven echo Wally Olins’ definition of corporate identity – 'strategy made visible' – but with an entirely opposite intent."

Sam Jacob, Mute

“manic and spell-binding”... “the visual forms that emerge in this speculation are fairly astounding: passports printed with cuneiform, bar codes that extrude into architectural space, postage stamps of mirrors and satellites, a national flag composed only of a field of gray, a monopoly board game that imagines the Parisian banlieues.” Design Issues

"There hasn't been anything quite this ambitious from a design team since Bruce Mau hit his stride...Uncorporate Identity collects the critical design projects they have undertaken to date and amplifies them with new material."

Rick Poynor, Creative Review

"After decades of corporate identity being reduced to logos, Metahaven has undertaken a larger project to explore identity in politics and culture, online and across borders. This expansive monograph is its own project – the transformation of a design practice into a research laboratory and think tank. An important book." Design Observer

"An important status report for design in the contemporary context (…) Metahaven’s book will be a strong contender for either the sexiest thing in your library carrel or the smartest thing in your beach bag." Alan Smart, Abitare

"One of the most innovative design studios in Europe." Süddeutsche Zeitung

"One of the most radical groups of designers in Europe (…) Metahaven use a research-based, speculative 'meta-design' practice to rethink the structural parameters and channels through which emerging organizational models and political paradigms inadvertently stumble upon a form of communication." Kaleidoscope

About Metahaven

Metahaven is a studio for design and research, founded by Vinca Kruk and Daniel van der Velden. Metahaven's work—both commissioned and self-directed—reflects political and social issues in provocative graphic design objects. Metahaven released Uncorporate Identity, a book on politics and visual identity, published by Lars Müller in 2010. Solo exhibitions include Affiche Frontière (CAPC musée d'art contemporain de Bordeaux, 2008) and Stadtstaat (Künstlerhaus Stuttgart/Casco, 2009). Group exhibitions include Forms of Inquiry (AA London, 2007), Manifesta8 (Murcia, 2010), the Gwangju Design Biennale 2011 (Gwangju, Korea) and Graphic Design: Now In Production (Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, 2011).

In 2011, Metahaven was selected by Rolling Stone Italia as one of the world's 20 most promising design studios.

Vinca Kruk (Leiden, 1980) is a graphic designer and writer. After graduating from the Willem de Kooning Academy in 2003 Vinca became a researcher at the Sealand Identity Project at the Jan van Eyck Academie's design department in 2003 where she remained a researcher until late 2005 working on various projects such as Museum of Conflict and Quaero. Until 2007, Vinca collaborated with Adriaan Mellegers on graphic design commissions for Extra City Antwerp, Wiels, Jan van Eyck Academie and A&S Publishers. She joined forces with Daniel van der Velden, founding Metahaven, a studio combining design, research and writing and they have been working and publishing together since. Vinca has been a tutor of editorial design and design critique at ArtEZ Academy of Arts in Arhem since 2007, and was a mentor at Valence Academy of the Arts, France (2009) and the IM Master programme at Design Academy Eindhoven (2010). • vinca [at] metahaven.net

Daniel van der Velden is a graphic designer and writer. He graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy, and studied in Maastricht at the Jan van Eyck Academie under Michael Rock, Armand Mevis, Paul Elliman, Karel Martens and Jan van Toorn. Daniel ran a graphic design studio together with Maureen Mooren from 1998 to 2007, working on innovative projects in the field of editorial and identity design. Clients included the architecture journal Archis (now Volume), TNT Post (former Dutch PTT), the Holland Festival, and many more.

Daniel joined forces with Vinca Kruk after he initiated the Sealand Identity Project at the Jan van Eyck Academie. They subsequently founded Metahaven, a studio combining design, research, and writing.

Daniel is a Senior Critic at Yale University, where he joined the Graphic Design MFA's faculty in 2007. He is a tutor at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam. He lectured at the University of Amsterdam school of Media Studies, and serves as an advisory board member at the International Design Forum in Ulm. • daniel [at] metahaven.net
